Me and the fiancé spent a relaxing 10 days away in Portugal in March. Great weather, accommodation & food as well as some amazing walks and the biggest wave in the world! Highly recommended.
Fly to Porto (OPO) – we flew direct from London!
Recommend you hire a car to get around — we chose Sixt for a few good reasons: it’s one of the cheapest, they allow you to bring back full petrol (full to full) and don’t charge a premium to drop back to a different airport).
Porto’s really lovely — we stayed for 4 nights, which we felt was enough time to see and enjoy the place.
Eurostars Rio Douro Hotel & Spa
The hotel is a little outside of Porto and offers these stunning views up and down the river. Their restaurant is amazing, they have both an indoor and outdoor swimming pool and the spa is really nice too!
Walking: There are a number of hiking trails nearby but don’t leave without doing this one:
Only 1 euro each and 8km each way — you walk up the river, great views and lots of steps! Makes for a really great afternoon.
On the morning of the 5th day we headed off for the 3 hour drive down to Lisbon. Being a long drive though, we decided to stop at Nazaré 2/3s of the way down. Quite bizarre place with the world’s biggest waves.. Definitely worth a visit!
We finally arrived in Lisbon on the evening of the 5th day and stayed here for 5 nights in an amazing Airbnb..
New and fresh, the apartment was perfect for us and well situated with restaurants only a short walk away.
Lisbon Half Marathon: On Sunday I ran the half marathon — quite an easy run to be honest as was mostly downhill (it starts across the other side of the bridge).
Float in: after checking out of our Airbnb on the last day, we went to Float in while waiting for the flight home. Lots to choose from but we went for the love float package!
Close to apartment, great food and service. It’s like a little cafe that serves lunch during the day — well worth a visit.
Small but really awesome burger place, don’t miss.
